…and the Oscar goes to…TRAJAN!

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

When it comes to typefaces, Trajan is the Jeff Bridges or Sandra Bullock of the Typeface world. Or maybe Robert De Niro would be a better comparison, given the number of movies where it has had the leading roll. From such epics as Titanic, Sex And The City, with its diamond encrusted type to Apollo 13 or Hotel Rwanda, Trajan has starred in hundreds of film posters and seems to be the typeface of choice of movie poster graphic designers across many genres.

Trajan, an old style serif typeface, designed in 1989 by Carol Twomby for Adobe is based on a Roman column inscription type style. Trajan is certainly not ‘typecast’ by appearing is hundreds of movie posters
It has also starred in TV titles like The West Wing and on many John Grisham paperbacks not to mention being the official logotype of several Universities.

Love it or hate it, if there was an Oscar for typefaces I’m sure Trajan and Twomby would win the prize hands down.

TPI in the UK

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

SteveI don’t doubt that some may have viewed the launch of TPI UK last summer as an act of lunacy. After all, the UK was in the midst of the worst recession in living memory, many businesses were reducing their marketing spend, there was arguably an over-supplied market and to cap it all, TPI was virtually unknown in the UK. Others, like me took a different view and saw it as a time of great opportunity, with companies looking for innovative new ways to make their products stand out in an crowded marketplace and their budgets stretch even further. This is where TPI really comes in to it’s own!

I completely concur with the thoughts of my colleague Alan in his recent article
, the passion and attention to detail that TPI exhibits in all areas of our business is apparent to all, but it is our creative approach to POS that sets us apart from the competition. I am surprised at how few UK companies have a Structural Engineering department, in addition to graphic design capabilities. This combination makes for a potent mix of great design that really works in theatre. Our ability to engineer-out cost, produce more environmentally friendly products and create eye-catching designs never ceases to amaze me and more importantly, my clients. We have recently won a major new campaign with a very well known soft drinks company and as a direct result of our skills and creativity, they instructed one of their long term, preferred suppliers to employ a Structural Engineer. A bit of a ‘double-edged sword’ I admit, but none-the-less, a great compliment!

I addition, the fact that we offer litho, screen and digital print all under one roof, with pick & pack, kitting services and storage services all on-site has really got us noticed and won us many new friends.

As I continue to see parts of the UK I never thought existed and meet lots of new and interesting people in my quest for world dominance, I do so safe in the knowledge that I have a great team of talented and committed people backing me. A massive thanks to you all!

Early impressions in the new world of TPI

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Alan-BroganLitho, screen, digital……. all printing process that meant nothing 2 months ago. Now after two months of watching printers and finishers work it all begins to drop into place.

Like a team of forensic scientists every prinergy, plate and piece of POS is checked twice to ensure the quality of product and service is delivered to our customer. Being a newcomer here the most striking thing about working in TPI is not the amount of print that comes through our studio and leaves via our TPI branded delivery vehicles or the complicated print processes mentioned above but the attention to detail the team here pays to each and every job and each and every customer.

Customer service is paramount in any business or organisation but in TPI it is taken to another level. Like anything it is easy to preach the famous saying “Customer is King” , but here in TPI each department from sales to production really lives their working day through this “much thrown about mantra”.

For any buyer or business to suffer through a lack of customer care is inexcusable. The message from the top down reverberating in TPI is this won’t happen to our customers.

Be you a small, medium or large business your custom is and always will be appreciated in The Printed Image.
