On Friday 12th of October as part of the Focus Ireland 2018 “ Shine A Light Night”, I along with 80 others slept out in the Front Garden of the Law Society of Ireland at Blackhall Place in Dublin City centre.
This year, there were also Sleep-Out events at the Iveagh Gardens in Dublin, Spike Island in Cork, Wexford Town and over 60 companies nationwide sleeping out at their business premises. This has meant that the 2018 campaign has raised over €750,000 to date, with more donations to come over the next few weeks.
The night starts at 6pm on Friday evening and ends at 5.30am on Saturday Morning. During the evening we met and had talks from the founder of Focus Ireland Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy, the staff and the clients of Focus Ireland who they have helped. It really is humbling listening firsthand to their experiences and of the great work that Focus Ireland do. It really makes you appreciate what you have.
The question everybody has asked is “ did you get any sleep?” ….the honest answer is yes between 2am and 3.30am (nothing to do with the hipflask!) . The weather on the night itself was fine until 3.45am when it started to bucket rain and did not stop until Saturday evening. Everyone got absolutely soaked but took it in good spirits and stuck it out until Breakfast call at 5am. At the end of the day (or night in this case!) it was only one night for me so not a hardship by any means.
Particular thanks to The Printed Image who organised in-company fundraising activities such “ wear your Jersey to work day” and “raffle for a day off work” and donated directly. Big shout out to colleagues who took part in these events and also sponsored me personally. Very special thanks to the suppliers, friends and family who generously donated, to help me reach my fundraising target of €5,000 which I have now reached. It really is appreciated.
