Writing a blog on health and well-being after a boozy weekend does sound hypocritical, however it is being used to fuel much-needed healthier habits! Unlike New Year’s Day, Spring is an ideal time to change habits, and especially with the recent time change and longer evenings to look forward to, it’s possibly the best time of year to introduce, or re-introduce, healthier ways. Yes, it can be important to decide to change your diet after the Christmas excesses, but with cold weather to contend with in January it’s often difficult to maintain the health and fitness resolutions.
The National Guidelines on Physical Activity for Ireland state that, ‘Although many people think of health in terms of illness, health is a positive concept that covers your physical, mental and social well-being (Department of Health and Children, 2000). Physical activity benefits every aspect of your health. Regular physical activity reduces your risk of chronic diseases, such as coronary heart disease (CHD), type 2 diabetes, stroke, cancer, osteoporosis and depression. Adults start to get health benefits from at least 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking. This means an average of 30 minutes of activity on five days a week.’
The Printed Image Health and Wellness week took place between the 8th and 12th of April. The week encompassed a large variety of activities both inside and out. We encouraged staff to get involved in classes we had organised such as Pilates, Mediation, massage therapy, Learing ‘How To Unplug From Work’ with Ciara Conlon, healthy food options Corina Mooney, meal deals in ‘Chopped’ . Along with classes we provided an abundance of fruit provided by The Fruit People, yogurts and healthy snacks each morning in our canteen that were happily devoured by everyone!
During the week we organised a 3K walk each day at lunchtime which became extremely popular as the week progressed, influenced by beautiful sunshine! Overall the week became a huge success with everyone benefiting form the new elements introduced. We are already counting down the days until our next company themed week!
